(1915-20) Edgar Sold £120

Edgar has an upturned shaved rectangular stitched nose.  He has clear once painted eyes with big black pupils set quite close together, the fixing of which has been tied off at the back of the head. His ears have been re-affixed to give him a rather startled look! He is cork stuffed and a little balding. He was once yellow. He has 5 claws on both his paws and pads. His paw claws are unusually long. His original felt paws are large whereas his pads are quite small. He has a rattle inside him
Edgar is a very early Teddy with an unusual cloth rectangular label high on his back near his neck. It is old and faded and has been overwritten with the words "British made"  He may well be from the Chad Valley experimental period.

"I have some information for you about the “British Made” bear in your unidentified section. I am pretty sure he is a Chad Valley bear perhaps from 1914,the first year of production. In one of my books I read that the very first Chads had a chest button with the words “British Made”. This bear does have a look of a Chad-is cork stuffed-as were the early Chads and although he has a label instead of a button it does seem to me to indentify him as Chad. His rattle is also a sign that he was made by a good toymaker with original ideas."  Marigold Bears.
